Last Season's Final

This Season's Contenders

Horse : Choya

Choya has obvious ability and surely holds her own amongst this company, so why does she come here with three cheap wins to her name? Exactly what is she capable of? Well, her form is sound and her consistency, even with added penalty weight is very good. Capped WFA race wins early in the season have probably taken away any chance of championship glory. That said, the distance will pose no major concern and a repeat of some her recent form could put her in the mix. She will probably struggle to win but a good show is not beyond her.

Horse : Repins
Trainer : Major Smokee

Repins comes into the race full of confidence. She looks a very versatile filly, stretching her ability from 1000m to 1600m. Her run in the Ladbrokes Monthly Final, despite failing to make the placings, was indeed a very strong effort. She will have no issue with the distance or surface as it appears she runs well whatever faces her. It will be interesting to see just how good she is when they go to post in this and you could make a case for her being a likely winner. Small concerns arise from her draw but she is quite capable of taking that in her stride and put her best hoof forward.

Horse : Lady Quebec
Trainer : Cotton Castle

Cotton Castle saw off heavyweights, Shotgun Mike and DerekW10 when securing the services of Lady Quebec in January's auction. So far she has lived up to her price tag and has shown a little profit in her races. A win in this race would pay dividend to the confidence shown in her at the sales. It is pretty much cut and dry that a yielding surface would see the very best of the black filly. Granted her wish and with a plum draw, this one could take some beating. In a very open race littered with talent, she could be one to go well.

Trainer : Holmang Horses

Exam Challenge has been as busy as a bee this term. The races have come in droves, yet she will only carry a 2lb penalty in this race. That penalty will rise if success comes in the Ladbrokes Monthly Final. Her form has been ok, often running into a place in qualifying races. With a few of these being bagged into the final she may have been one who has been raced flat out. If that is the case then she may find it a tough ask to make an impression. If she has also been doing a bit a bagging herself, sparks may fly. A bit of an enigma in the line up.

Trainer : Holmang Horses

Fortunes Of War will haul a 4lb penalty in the race which will significantly slow her down. The trainer has three in the race and is likely to pose a bigger threat with one of the other runners. Her best may be on a dirt track but she has winning form over 1400m on firm going. It's probable that you will see the colours prominent in the race but it is unlikely that this filly will be the one cheered up to the line.

Horse : Halo Girl
Trainer : Steakpie

Cracking her maiden tag in a Ladbrokes Monthly Final was followed up the very next day by a swift double when she landed a Sprinters Challenge Qualifier. She has slowed since her explosive start and was poor in the monthly final, maybe citing the distance as not her bag, the minimum trip exposed her on that day. It's difficult to predict exactly which surface will suit her best here. Two wins will see here run off 122lb, a mark which is not too taxing. She could go well.

Horse : Bee Of Bang
Trainer : Unconte Stable

Five races into her career and the maiden tag was finally cracked. After landing a qualifying victory she has steadily gone about picking up the points necessary to feature in this race. She may be a bit partial to a fast surface but she has form on yielding and soft which reads well enough. Distance will not create any hazard in running and she holds a fair enough chance. Whether she can blitz these is another story, only time will tell.

Horse : Mary Celeste
Trainer : Wrs Stables

You just don't pay nearly £1300 for a filly whom you wouldn't expect success with. Mary Celeste is just brute force amongst these. Similarities could be made to the filly, Shes My Girl (Running Monster G), champion juvenile a couple of seasons back. On that day she blitzed a highly regarded field and if Mary Celeste is of similar mould, she would come into this race as a hot favourite. She oozes class and has not yet been tried and tested at full throttle. It will be exciting, to say the least, to watch her wind up to the finish. She has to be on the shortlist as a festival champion contender.

Trainer : Daltons Donkeys

Daltons Donkeys has bought himself a finalist at a very cheap premium and has to rate as something of a bargain. If she were to win this race, it would go down as one of the best bits of auction business in recent times. Fearful of putting my foot in the proverbial and made to look the fool, I wouldn't like to say that she cannot win this race, so I won't. Instead I will congratulate the yard on grabbing a challenge horse for not much more than the supplementary fee itself. There is definitely a profit in that!

Trainer : Shotgun Mike

It's not often that you see the champion trainer single handed in a final. It is also not that often that you see the better horses from the yard at this trip feature in a consolation first instance. Fragile Tension was bought from the Vasya yard and to date hasn't produced much in the way of form. Don't let that pull the wool over your eyes. Any horse in a final coming from this yard will be wound up. Ok, so she may not be regarded in the upper echelons of ability but with a bit of luck in running, she could still put in a biggie.

Horse : Opaque Glass

Opaque Glass gatecrashed the party with a last ditch effort in the final qualifier of the season. Fast going over 1600m saw this one put in a remarkable effort when scoring beating quite a few of this field along the way. If she can convert her appearance there into a similar effort in this final , she could be very close indeed. A barrier of horses will greet her inside, coming widest of all. She will look to sweep the outside and put in a charge late on and remains a threat.

Trainer : Holmang Horses

It seems to be the case that the yard are naming their better challenge contenders with the prefix, Natusik. Last season's classic victory with Polukhina had Holmang Horses screaming, "I LOVE NATUSIK POLUKHINA!!!!!" Was the trainer referring to the horse or his loved one? I think both. Will his charge in this have him screaming "I love Norwegians!" She certainly is well amongst them in this final and is sure to contest from the off. It seems plausible that she will be far better on the dirt but that could be something of a smokescreen and she may be well suited to a yielding or even soft going. Of the three saddled in the race her chance is of the higher order and she will be there or thereabouts.

Trainer : Burkveen Racing

Already a challenge winner after taking the Ladbrokes Monthly over the minimum trip, she will come into this race with utmost respect from her fellow competitors. She arrived in this final by the skin of her teeth by virtue of a better finishing position over Hurrem Sultan. Capitalising on this will make success taste all the more sweet. I'm not sure whether she can make it two from two in her challenge career but the yard have to be respected.

Trainer : Liveoak Stables

Christmas Magic was bought out of the sales ring in February which makes me think they have not taken the decorations down just yet, at the Liveoak Stables abode. All jokes aside, she must command respect in this race coming from a yard who are no strangers to this level. It does appear though that she may be better suited to a shorter trip but she is certainly adept with a chance to dip her toe. She may rely on a yielding surface to show up well and therein lies her best chance. Possible each way claims.
