Last Season's Final

This Season's Contenders

Horse : Randwick

Randwick's credentials are already backed up by the fact that he is a dual challenge final champion. Both victories came during his juvenile season but on the face of things he was largely disappointing when tackling the St Leger last season. He will be engaged in a consolation King George race besides his interest in this. He clearly handles the trip and is partial to a fast going. He is well away from the rail, which history shows is not a great place to be and he has major claims in the race.

There is form to see that White Knighte is at home on a muddy track and therein lies his chance. HIs versatility has also secured him a run in this years King George final. He has no incured any weight penalty and his mid draw will certainly enhance his chance, judging by recent statistics. Two from the last five challenge finals over course and distance have come from stall seven. His chance of victory will be slightly dented should the ground come up fast but has obvious claims on muddy.

This race will see a challenge final debut for Charnwood Stables. They couldn't ask for a more experienced challenge finalist to carry their colours for the first time. However, the weight penalty he will shoulder in this race will probably be his undoing and a win in this race looks unlikely.

Trainer : Stardust Racing

Like a few others, Glorious Creature is double handed this term by tackling the King George as well as the Cesarewitch. He was a challenge final winner in his juvenile season over course and distance. That win came on a fast surface, where he is arguably more at home. With only a two pound penalty to his name, it is likely that we will see a good effort from the Stardust Racing nag, should conditions come to his strength.

Horse : Apache Down
Trainer : Liveoak Stables

Apache Down clearly favours a fast over a muddy track. Two of his seven wins in his career cam in the qualifying series for this race, both over distance on a fast going. With a four pound penalty to carry, it does appear that there are lower weighted charges who lay waiting to pounce. However, if conditions suit and Apache Down is in fine fettle we can expect a sound performance. He certainly holds each way claims.

Trainer : Shotgun Mike

In the last twenty-two races over course and distance when tackling a challenge final, no horse has succesfully manouvered from stall one to claim victory. History is not on his side coming from the rail and We're Gonna Rock could struggle to make any impression in the race. He has shown his best on fast going but even that may not be enough to hear his name sung from the rafters.

Trainer : Shotgun Mike

The yard have been incredibly unlucky in drawing the inside berths with all three of their contenders in this race. He will be at home on the surface but again like his stablemate before him, will have to contend with an almost impossible start position. Only one horse in challenge history has managed to win from the stall in a championship race over course and distance.

Trainer : Butlers Yard

Viking Warship's solitary win on the surface came in a C Division race. His best form on the surface has come when the ground shows up muddy. Drawn wide will give him a boost and his chance is increased by carrying the minimum weight. Whether he has enough to overturn some of these on recent meetings is unlikely, although sometimes unpredictable, unlikely!

Trainer : Shotgun Mike

On the rare occasion that an inside draw has produced a winner over course and distance in a challenge final of recent times, stall three has hit three times in twenty-two races. If Atomic Symfonia is going to win this race, the horse will be reliant on a fast going. His only qualifying race on a muddy surface doesn't look too bad a form line and he may be one who benefits either way. Of the three drawn against the rail, he is the likely charge to get amongst them at the finish.

Horse : Latin Glory
Trainer : Queen Bee

Queen Bee has had this horse busy during his challenge career. This race will be his seventh challenge final. He has twice been a runner-up when tackiling a dirt track in a final. The going split between the two making Latin Glory a versatile animal who may not be concerned whatever the going. He looked impeccable when claiming the St Leger as a three year old and will be looking to secure a second challenge success in this. He is a very interesting runner that will be with them when they turn for home. A lively contender for the crown, even with a small penalty to carry.

Trainer : Butlers Yard

Second of the horses representing the yard, Vasco De Gama looks to be the stronger of the pair. He has shown some indefferent form on a dirt track which makes his chance in this all the more difficult to sum up. His maiden win came on a fast track but beyond that he has not managed to score since. That said, there is form to back up his claim in the race and he will come here without penalty. Something of an enigma in the race.

Trainer : Queen Bee

If Latin Glory has been busy during his career, Songs Of Freedom has been a machine. This will be his eighth challenge final. All previous seven visits to the pinnacle have ended fruitless and it may appear on the surface of things that this race will hold no different outcome. Fast ground will certainly help his cause, however, his draw and the fact that there are some pretty good fast going horses lining up may act to serve his fate in the race. He is no without a chance but for me, stable mate, Latin Glory may have the upper hand over him.

Trainer : Liveoak Stables

Henry's best efforts have come over the marathon trip and suprisingly this will be his first effort in a challenge final over 2850m. He is probably one of the better 3200m in the race and may find a few too good for him at this trip. His trainer is experienced enough to know what to expect from his horses and he wouldn't be here if he didn't have some sort of chance. He is a tentative each way prospect.

Trainer : Burkveen Racing

His victory in the last qualifier of this season saw him leapfrog stable mate, Golden Memory and take his place in this final. His efforts on a fast going cannot go unnoticed and maybe his trainer's decision to bump him into this final ahead of Golden Memory was his reasoning behind that. He will need to come around the field from his wide draw when making his debut in a challenge final over this trip. His chance largely relies on the going coming up fast and even that may see him looking at the behind of a good few in this race.
