Last Season's Final

This Season's Contenders

Horse : Dardanelles
Trainer : DerekW10

TEXTDardanelles was subject to quite a bit of auction interest back in February. No less than eight trainers fought for his services and the final hammer went to the bid of DerekW10. Already a challenge finalist, his trainer sat tight with his buy and geared him up ready for an assault on this race. The horse has an impeccable record over 1400m on a turf track. In thirteen races he has only failed to hit the money on two occasions and should he run here on a soft or good going, the 4lb penalty may look a pittance in comparison to what he could achieve.

Trainer : Stable 76

The last time Juan De Austria ran a challenge final over similar conditions, he was a long way off the pace. On that day he came up against Sir Sam Silver on a yielding track. The form is not great on yielding in contrast to his efforts on a sound surface. Seventh in this race last season, a little bit of luck with the conditions could see a far better effort this term. His draw position will give him a good look at the competition but he will need everything to fall into place on raceday to make his mark.

Horse : Karaman

There is much to like about Karaman on a soft or good going and his low weight is an added bonus. His fifth place here last season was a personal best in challenge final runs. His four other efforts came to nothing and whether he can excel here is certainly not impossible. Much relies on his conditions coming up trumps and even so, he may find one or two too good on the day. He is, for sure, not out of this and with the yards excellence in these type of events, expect a bold show.

Horse : Rock Thunder

A debutant on the challenge final scene, Rock Thunder seems more at home over a shorter trip. His efforts when tackling a 1400m haven't really singled him out as a potential shortlist candidate but who knows, he could be a sleeping giant! Something tells me that he is one who has tried to capitalise in races when others have been avoiding the win. He will be primed for a shot at least but others command more appeal.

Trainer : DerekW10

El Nino's two wins in the qualifying campaigns of this season have come over 1800m. The penalty that faces the "monster" of the race will again prove his undoing. He is the only behemoth to make it into this final and not one trainer in raceclubs history can deny he is awesome. He has three times been an unlucky second in title deciders but did land a Ladbrokes Monthly Final as a juvenile. His appearance here is noticeable but he will probably fail to stamp his authority he so often commands. He is not without a chance of a place though.

Trainer : Butlers Yard

A juvenile runner up in the sprinters challenge final behind Public Enemy No1 is a massive form line. He has performed with tremendous effort and consistency in his four challenge finals prior to lining up here. He has remained I quiet fancy of mine for some time an we can expect his usual 100% effort. With a little luck he will be among the front runners and could cause a bit of a stir as they approach the turn for home. Well fancied but may find his draw a bit of an inconvenience.

Horse : Green Birdie
Trainer : Shotgun Mike

Where's the birdie? Oh, he's in stall one, bingo! A clear run up the rail will see this former Nunthorpe champion make giant strides in this final. He was sixth here two seasons ago and didn't get the best of it that day. This time round he will have no excuses. He is a massive fancy to add to his trainers impressive tally of challenge winners and kudos to his yard for getting him here again running off the minimum weight. One to watch for sure.

Horse : Wizzimo

Wizzimo ran some very hard fought qualifiers as a three year old in amongst a generation dominated by Darley Arabian and Gentleman Earl. The 3YO failed to win a qualifier then but showed guts and determination and most of all consistency to get amongst the bacon in three of his seven races. The season culminated with a more than admirable fifth place in the final. If Wizzimo can carry that form into this race then he has to be a player. His low eight will see him in good fettle to mount a challenge.

Horse : King Kenny D
Trainer : Queen Bee

King Kenny D is a hardy sort. His qualification into finals has been good enough to rank him amongst the top sprinters in recent seasons. Unfortunately, when it comes to the crunch, he has failed to deliver. Even though he comes into this race with a featherweight to carry, it is difficult to see him winning but he is sure to have a crack for the yard. Overall, he may be suited better to 1200m and may feel the lungs tighten down the straight.

Trainer : Shotgun Mike

A Little Extra came to the yard for a small price and has paid his way no end. The black colt seems to like a little softness in the ground to show his true colours. His yard are very selective with their entrants into events like this and his appearance here cannot be taken lightly. With a wealth of talent to choose from, the fact that he is here signals he has a chnce. The final going is going to play a major part in determining a champion and this one is not here just for a run bonus.

Horse : Sanitarium
Trainer : Shotgun Mike

Sanitarium's only other appearance in a challenge final, ended with bitter disappointment, finishing last in the Nunthorpe behid Darley Arabian last season. You can go as far to say that he has been another auction bargain to find it's way to the yard and whatever he achieves in this race will be a bonus. There is form to read that the horse benefits from a firm or good going and on the day he may well put in a sound effort.

Horse : Star Watch

Star Watch has run below par, when fancied in his two previous challenge final outings. There is certain ability within and a change of fortune in this race is long overdue. His best efforst have come when the rain has stayed away and the distance here should pose no threat to the talented colt. If he is a coiled spring for this race, a blistering effort is in the reckoning. He is an obvious danger to all and the fact that he comes here with only 120lbs ranks him amongst the early picks for the race.

Horse : Toxic Armada
Trainer : Stardust Racing

Could this final be the one to reward Stardust Racing with a championship return to the faith shown in this one at auction. There is a strong case that he is one of the better yielding horses in the race. His third place over the distance in his juvenile sprint final appearance goes a long way to cement that statistic. He has also been the most consistent competitor when the chips are down, recording three places from three championship events, twice going down to the majestic, Darley Arabian. I really like Toxic Armada's chances in this event and would go as far to say that he will go close, very close!

Trainer : Shotgun Mike

Tondra was the one to pay the price for Lucifer Incestus's last ditch effort to get into this final. The Victor Consortio trained was pushed down to the first instance consolation and Lucifer Incestus lines up here from stall thirteen. Second as a juvenile in the sprint challenge behind Torres Legend (Nine Point Eight) was a great effort on yielding. Subsequent efforts in his two latest finals have not been as impressive but a return here to his favoured going, should see him there or thereabouts. A small penalty would not be a problem for him, having to find a way around a wall of horses to his inner may.
