Get the party started with the QE II Celebrations: Enter today!

This weekend RaceClubs.com is celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s birthday. Even though she has two birthdays, the 21st April being her real birthday but she only celebrates it officially later in the year, the Race Programmer has always been fond of the queen, so he’s decided to celebrate both.

We kid you not, the Race Programmer and Queen Elizabeth have enjoyed a very close relationship ever since he taught her how to ride her first horse. He compared her to another Elizabeth, some actress trying to make a name for herself in movies about dogs and horses, while she compared him to an inept goatherd. Had it not been for Philip, the Race Programmer maintains his future would have been different. Fortunately, her loss is RaceClubs.com’s gain. Had it not been for the Race Programmer we would not be hosting the QEII Celebrations.

RaceClubs.com is sponsoring the QEII Celebrations with US$500.00 and everyone is welcome to enter.

One horse from each grade that competes in the QEII Celebrations will be randomly selected from a lucky draw to win one of the following prizes:

US$60.00 G1 Winner:
US$25.00 G2 Winner:
US$15.00 G3 Winner:

(Prizes will be paid on Tuesday, 24 April 2012.)

There will also be two Prive races sponsored with US$200.00 cash each:

Win an extra $1,000 in the Eggs-tra Eggs-citing #Easter Races on Raceclubs.com (6-9 April 2012)?

Eggs-tra Eggs-citing Easter Races - £630 Sponsorships!

Easter is a time for rebirth and renewal, both physically and metaphysically, and a friendly reminder to re-start your forgotten New Year resolutions after you’ve honoured your spiritual self and over indulged your physical self on Easter treats. What would Easter be without candied Easter eggs, chocolate Easter bunnies and spicy hot cross buns?

In more austere times, the traditional Easter egg was hardboiled. It was hardly an exciting treat unless you grew up in the dark ages, until some enterprising individuals decided that a splash of colour and rhinestones was all the humble breakfast food needed to become more exciting. It was probably hard enough trying to get finicky kids to eat a boiled egg unless you could make it more exciting for them. All that was needed was to replace the insides with chocolate and fondant and the sale of Easter eggs took off.

The Race Programmer was going to take credit for re-inventing the Easter egg until we reminded him how that would make him older than Hugh Hefner. Fortunately, he did reinvent horse racing for the masses by bringing it online through RaceClubs.com. He also made virtual horse racing eggs-tra eggs-citing by sponsoring the races with more sponsorships than one would think was virtually possible. If sponsorships were used as Easter eggs in an Easter egg hunt then you’d find them with your mouse and feed them to horses like candy-coated sugar cubes. There’s enough to make you sick - but not enough to make you stop.

RaceClubs.com’s Eggs-tra Eggs-citing Easter races is a four day eggs-travaganza reminding everyone to cherish the simple things in life, celebrate with a splash of colour, indulge in moderation (if only that were possible!) but also to get your horses racing over the Easter weekend for all the stickiest and sweetest virtual horse racing sponsorships they’re capable of finding. In keeping with the traditional Easter egg hunt, you’ll find your Easter treats hidden in the Race Program in the Eggs-tra Eggs-citing Easter races.

Graham Clifford Reviews Day 3 of the Challenge Finals (Stayer Distance)

Day 3 of the Challenge Finals – Stayers review

With Graham Clifford

Laid-back approach wins the day

It was like a bevy of swans were on the attack. As Friday evening fell in Canada King Mojo from the Free and Easys stable led a charge of four grey speed merchants in the Stayers Challenge Final.

As the line approached King Mojo held off the challenges of Jemchipsa Picard and Snow Shift to land a sensational win and the first challenge series victory for a stable that makes nonchalance look like an art.

But if the title of the winning stable implies they get by on luck rather than skill it’s utterly misleading. Since opening their stable in October of last year the Free and Easys have had 17 runners in Challenge finals so it was about time that one of their charges finally broke the duck and delivered a winning cheque.

Speaking afterwards the victorious stable owner said “I was actually writing a poem in one of the loos at the course during the race and lost track of time. When I came out of the men’s room I was swarmed by well-wishers and people congratulating me. I thought to myself ‘well yes it’s a good poem but this is a bit of an over-reaction!”

Steak Pie with victorious sauce

Two years and one day after Lupus in Fabula handed the Steakpie stable its greatest ever win in a Classic Challenge Final another lucrative race was won with aplomb in Australia.

The brilliantly named Tequila Cooler got off to a flyer in the stayer’s challenge final and led from start to finish. With Charlie Saxon working his magic this was arguably the most commanding performance by any horse in the three day end of season challenge final extravaganza.

Officially second-placed Virtual Star from the Top star stable finished just over half a length behind the champion but in reality this win was in the bag from very early on.

An official trackside in Oz told me that he even noticed Saxon sending a text on his mobile around the half way mark so dominant was Tequila Cooler.

It would be wrong to review this race without a quick mention for Fable Countess who finished third in the end. For much of the race the 2-year old filly labored at the very back of the field before cutting through it to land a highly credible placed finish.

This ones for King Kenny

The clearly emotional Bottle Top Stud owner wiped a tear from his cheek. Wearing a Liverpool FC tie he told reporters after his 3-year-old Red Anfield had taken the St Ledger final on Friday that this win “was for King Kenny”.

Local reporters in Dubai thought he was referring to a local member of the Royalty famous for his obsession with ballet and so were initially perplexed.

A quick word in their ear from yours truly clarified the situation for them though and when Kop goalkeeping legend Bruce Grobbelaar joined the celebrations it was obvious this was for a certain Scot who’s enduring a terrible time as boss of the Reds.

The win itself was as action packed as a night out with Andy Carroll. Undoubtedly this was the most unlikely win of the week as Red Anfield came from nowhere to land the St Ledger final for fillies.

As they took the last bend in Dubai the eventual winner was third from last and seemingly well out of contention. China Emperor Ii led the field for almost all the race and showed no signs of relinquishing that advantage.

But once Red Anfield found a gap in the home strait she went for it blowing the rest of the field away and just getting her nose in front less than 10 feet from the finishing line.

How Kenny could do with some of the inspiration and confidence seen in the Bottle Top Stud!

No one can topple the Temple of Artemis

When Sky Castle Stables paid £275 for Temple of Artemis last November there were one or two who wondered if it was money well spent.

The ‘Virtual racing gazette’ ran a piece which asked “why would anyone pay good money for a temple which was destroyed in 401AD?”

A week later they ran an apology outlining that they thought Sky Castle stables had actually purchased the ruins of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and not the virtual gg.

On Friday evening in Hong Kong there were no Greek tragedies on show as Temple of Artemis added yet another challenge finals win to the stable’s amazing collection.

So a temple does the job for a castle winning the St. Ledger!

No can escape Charlotte’s web

It was the perfect way to finish three days of exhilarating racing. Under the picture of the London bus the 14 runners and riders set off over the maximum distance in England with only one thing in mind.

The Shotgun_mike stable, which half an hour earlier had celebrated victory for Obsessive Cure in the Cesarewitch Challenge Final for 4-7year old colts, was now aiming to land the female version of the race with the pair of Lisa Lipps and La Yequa Colorado heavily backed.

Lisa Lipps took up the early running but after a quarter of the race had been run Charlotte’s Web from the North and South stable made a break away and built up a lead she would never let go of.

This was the stable’s first challenge final win and the celebrations went on late into the night. Hopefully the first of many North and South – the first of many!

Spare a thought for the Jemchipsa Magic stable

As owners old and new celebrated challenge final victory over the last three days a warm feeling of euphoria spread across virtual winner’s enclosures in the USA, Hong Kong, Australia, Dubai and England.

But for the Jemchipsa Magic stable these end of season finals will forever be known as ‘the bridesmaid’s finals.’

Still waiting for a first finals win the yard endured three second placed finishes in a frustrating series.

Firstly Jemchipsa Nova came closest to catching So Theatrical in the Oaks Final on Thursday while later that evening Rachels Paradox was pipped in the King George by Service Resumes from the Sky Castle Stables.

And then on Friday Jemchipsa Picard came so close to winning the Stayers Challenge Final for colts but had to settle for runner up after King Mojo captured the wonderful win.

Better luck next time Jemchipsa Magic, you’ll be in that winner’s enclosure before you know it.

Graham Clifford Reviews Day 2 of the Challenge Finals (Classics Distances)

Day 2 of the Challenge Finals – Classics review

With Graham Clifford

New kid on the block steals the limelight

Less than 24-hours after collecting his first ever challenge final win Amber Fields was back in the winner’s enclosure in the USA this time collecting an even bigger winning cheque. Oh yes all the women want Amber and all the men want to be him! In his last race Harjab(England) actually came last in a classic challenge qualifier though to be fair that day he was running on empty. On Thursday on stateside he was an entirely different beast!

Classic finals can get the better of a horse and their owner as nerves jangle and the more experienced and successful owners appear unbeatable. Under grey clouds though Harjab and his jockey Wayne Bailey kept their composure.

In the stands I was told that Amber Fields was very animated throughout this final. You see Harjab found himself on the rails from early on and it seemed that he wasn’t trying to move off them. By the half-way point the 2-year-old, who was plucked from the sales ring for a mere £9.45, was back in fifth and it appeared as though his goose was cooked. Indeed it was difficult to see how Mavatorian Beast from the shotgun_mike stable could be beaten, he had a three lengths lead with the line in touching distance. But somehow Bailey found an opening and Harjab finished at electric speed.

So delighted was Amber he pulled his jumper over his head and ran around the track followed by local police!

Textbook display from Gracious Lady secures Classic win

If Harjab had pulled out all the stops to capture the Classic final for colts at the death in Thursday’s first big race of the day then Gracious Lady from the Wrs Stable ran a textbook race from start to finish. Indeed even when the grey La Femmezilla from the Nightmare stable made a last gasp dash for the line Gracious Lady (apparently named after Jo Brand) kept her composure to send her yard into a state of euphoria!

The sensational victory in Hong Kong brings to five the total of challenge final wins for the Wrs Stable but in terms of prize money this has been the biggest of the big.

In a recent interview the wife of owner Ron explained the routine the couple share when their nags are fighting it out on Challenge final day, she said “Ron likes to have a beer while he is watching the finals (Just an excuse on his part), another beer if celebrations of a victory are required and a large one if it is commiserations. For myself I am a romantic. I will cuddle up with Ron while we watch and give a big kiss if we win and also need a cuddle and a kiss if we lose. A good amount of cheering occurs during the race particularly if the amber nectar has been flowing. Ron watches with disgust as I celebrate with a glass of water!”

Let’s hope the amber nectar was flowing on Thursday night Ron, you definitely deserve it!

Sky Castle Stables reaches the 50 win mark first

After the Sky Castle finals victory on Wednesday, which brought its grand total of challenge final wins to 49, I asked if this yard or Shotgun_mikes would be the first to hit the half-century of top wins.

Duc De Richelieu from the Sky Castle stables captured the Derby in the USA one hour before Shotgun_mike’s 50th win thereby delivering a moral victory to the stable in blue.

Winning jockey Charlie Saxon described Duc De Richelieu as one of the most impresses rides he’d ever had and having been with every virtual female jockey in the game he speaks from experience!

Sky Castle stables snapped up this youngster in January paying the Vasya stable £511 for his services, money well spent by a stable that has this challenge series lark down to a tee.

Old habits die hard

‘So Theatrical’ just couldn’t help herself. Leading by at least four lengths in Thursday’s Oaks final in Hong Kong she took the foot off the gas as the line neared just to entertain the crowds.

The victory was never in doubt, the 16th challenge final success for the RedHalo Racing stable – hats off to you guys, but for a moment the Jemchipsa Magic stable must have thought this was their chance to get that elusive first win at this grade.

With her mind elsewhere So Theatrical appeared to lose concentration nearly gifting the big win to Jemchipsa Nova who just ran out of turf at the end.

“I’m not sure what happened” said a clearly shocked Charlie Saxon after riding back-to-back winners, he continued “one minute she was storming ahead the next it was like she was on the beach at Blackpool.”

Still a wins a win and congratulations to RedHalo Racing.

The Challenge final masters share Royal loot

Shotgun_mike may have lost out on getting the 50th challenge final win first but he didn’t let it show as his combination of Eccellenza Suecia and Heinz Huber delivered the Queen Elizabeth win on Thursday evening.

And it was fitting that the horse beaten into second was Champagne Opel from the Sky Castle stables. Between them the two yards now have 103 Challenge final winners according to my calculator, that’s simply astonishing.

On the dirt in Dubai Sky Castles added to their tally when Service Resumes romped to victory in the King George. It was very much a family affair with the stable taking 1st, 3rd and 4th in the final.

Now Sky Castle Stables face a fight to retain ownership of the stable with a number of wealthy sheiks present in Dubai enquiring as to what it would take to take this brilliant yard for their own!
