Loona Park doesn't have to sing for his supper even though he made a meal of the opposition in this weekend's Sprint Qualifier!

The RaceClubs.com Challenge Series
Friday 17th ~ Sunday 19th September 2010

The weekend challenge scene takes in all the qualifiers for the juvenile colts and fillies. As the season progresses, the quality of races within the juvenile ranks intensifies and so too the race entries. Bigger fields make bigger prizes and as the season reaches the mid point, the big guns will soon come out to play all searching for the valuable qualifying points to hopefully catapult them to RaceClubs.com challenge series legends.

Sing For Supper makes meal of opposition

Loona Park celebrated their first taste of challenge racing success in this sprint qualifier. Having previously raced over the minimum trip, coming a length second on his challenge debut, Sing For Supper, upped in distance on this occassion, led his rivals a merry dance from pillar to post. The two year old colt went foot to the floor as the stalls opened and ran away with the race after stealing a march over his rivals. Undettered by a very quick start, Charlie Saxon used all his horsemanship ability to keep the horse on a steady gallop and without letting him go too much, kept a little in reserve to punt the horse to the line. The leader board has Gissys Nags runner, Capitano at the top of affairs but interestingly only eleven runners have competed in the series thus far, ten of them in opposition in this race with only Memory Of Cole absent. The form from this race may well turn out to be a good pointer for the end of season finale.

Divine Diva Stables didn't have the best of returns in the race from their three runners. The best they could manage was sixth place with Banzzaii heading up the stable charge. All three runners have incurred weight penalties for the series and it looked as though the weight did scupper any hance of a win for the yard. Both Lightning Kid and Konnichiwa have taken wins in the graded arena this season, mainly in small field races. Had their path been solely targetted at the qualifiers then it would have been no surprise to see them win in the company of the best juveniles. Now that their weight has risen it may be difficult to see either of these two in the winners enclosure. The weight may also be a problem for Capitano, who also put in a lacklustre display. Although at the head of the championship standings, he is another who will find it very difficult to give weight to his rivals and may now be considered out of the reckoning for a stint at championship glory.

After cracking his maiden tag in an allowance race, Can You Cut It came into the race off the back of a third place finish in a Sprinters Challenge Qualifier. Having found the winner too strong on that day it was encouraging for his trainer to see a reversal of fortune as he turned the form book on its head. The two year old bay colt tracked the pace setter for most of the race and turned into the straight looking dangerous. However, he didn't quite pack a finishing punch to trouble the winner and reluctantly relinquished second place close home prompting questions about his ability to stay the trip. It may be considered that his next effort may see him take in the shorter sprint distance of 1200m, which could possibly be exactly what the colt yearns. Despite the tank running low near the finish in this race it was a nice effort in defeat and may provide a base for a trip to the winners enclosure real soon.
