St Leger 3YO Colts 2850m Dirt Monday, November 29th 2010, 8.00pmLast Season's Final This Season's Contenders
Coming into this season, Randwick is unbeaten in challenge finals, two from two and last season he walked off as the juvenile classic champion. He won't be phased by the going but would probably favour a fast going over muddy to see the best of him. This race has been his season target. He has been competing in The Derby series, although not considered a final proposition, a consolation race waits prior to this race. Stall one has not been a happy place for a champion to emerge from but write him off at your peril. Moletown's Rating :
Fast going is a must for this horse. If muddy comes then he may as well be declared a non runner in this field. Even if fast is the order of the day, I fear there are far too many fast ground horses of better ability in the race and despite showing winning form on fast during qualifying, I suspect that the line is not a true reflection of how this race will run. An outside chance of a place is a possibility but overall he may struggle with some of these. Moletown's Rating :
This colt may be best matched with the marathon trip of 3200m. He has divided his racing pretty much evenly between dirt and turf and will crave a fast track to produce his best. He is lightly raced but will need all the help he can get to turn the form with some of these. For me, he is an outsider amongst far more capable runners. Moletown's Rating :
There is no doubting that this race makes El Legendario a favourite amongst these and there could be a little history in the making should he go on and win. Last season's juvenile champion will look to double up and win back-to-back challenge finals. He is a star and his auction price suggests this. The only thing that will pose a threat to him is the amount of fast ground lovers in this field. Even though this is his best suited condition, muddy ground would be a preferred option to narrow the field in terms of suitability. To be honest, I don't think it will matter what the going is for this one and I fully expect him to be in with a massive claim. Moletown's Rating :
Dirt is not this horses strong point and he has never recorded a win on the surface. Will things change when they go to post here? I don't think so and he is easily opposed in the race. He may run better than his current form suggests but will need a miracle to win in this company. Moletown's Rating :
Winner of his last three races, Hari Harian will be looking to make it four in a row in this final. He may be another who produces better over 3200m and can hope for a decent run in the race but the field is packed full of quality and this horse will do well to finish midfield. He didn't cost a lot at auction, which looks a good bit of business but that's about it as far as the positives go. I fear he will struggle. Moletown's Rating :
Never Yield shows up quite well on a muddy surface but his best form has come over 3200m. His low wins will see him good for a prolonged challenge career but as for this race he is dependant on a muddy track and I just feel he is lacking a bit against some more creditable mud lovers. He is not void of a bad run though and might surprise a few. Moletown's Rating :
I remain undecided about his chances in this race. I suppose a lot will depend on how he performs in The Derby. Could that race tip him over the edge, should he manage a good result there. Muddy or fast for this one? I'm not sure and I am also unsure about his ability to see the trip in this company. I think I better leave this one and watch him on the day, an interesting, yet confusing horse. One thing I can be sure of is that he is good, you just don't pay over £1000 for a poor horse. I just can't work him out! Moletown's Rating :
Muddy will probably be the order of the day for Slaughtered. His form over the trip will read a victory over a few of these. His chance may rest too much in the lap of the Gods and even a favoured going may see him come up a little short but a good effort in the race and a place is not beyond him. If fast comes then it is goodnight to any chance he holds. Moletown's Rating :
I really like Dusk Til Dawn! He put in a magnificent effort when sixth behind El Legendario in last seasons juvenile final following up his fine effort in the classic, when third behind stable mate, Randwick, a day earlier. I don't think the going will be any concern to his trainer and he will be charged to the max for a run. He is definitely a major player in the race and despite not yet crowning himself a champion, a good run in this could change all that. He must be considered amongst the favourites. Moletown's Rating :
Operatic Opus will stake his claim if the going comes up muddy, anything bar his favourite conditions will blow his challenge and warrant him an also ran. He may not be the first hope in the race for the yard and will probably still need to find his best form to overturn some of these on muddy ground. It's a safe bet that he will be wound up and ready but he may need a bit of help from the random to win this race. Despite his love for the surface, the colt has never won a race on muddy and found one too good on a few occasions, maybe the same will happen here. Moletown's Rating :
This horse will just love it if the going comes up fast. If it doesn't, then there is not much point in the animal being saddled up. His record speaks for itself on the surface with seven of his ten wins coming on a fast track. However, I just feel there is a little more needed in the tank to be in the limelight in this race. He is certainly not out of it on a fast surface, although others may just have his measure. Moletown's Rating :
I am not convinced that a dirt track will favour Maroon Spirit's chances in this race. He is a great horse over 2400m but when the pinch is on, late in the race here, he could be found wanting. His best effort in qualifying came on fast going behind International Spy and I have already labelled that race as one of the weaker qualifier's this term. I'm not saying that a good run isn't beyond his capabilities, it's just that I see this task very difficult for the horse and I can't see him winning the race. Moletown's Rating :
Soulquake System will not be bothered by the going and has similar claims to the title as Dusk Til Dawn. Dubai is a very difficult track to judge how the draw will affect the race. History has proven over the distance that the winners have come from a varied stall position, however, a wide berth in stall fourteen has not always reaped rich reward and this may be a telling factor. Still, Soulquake System is definitely one for the shortlist as he is a superb animal. Moletown's Rating : |
