Why It Pays To Invest In Yearlings by Moletown: http://forums.raceclubs.com/Posts.aspx?fid=38&tid=286944&iv=y

The RaceClubs.com Challenge Series
- - Why It Pays To Invest In Yearlings - -

The introduction of the yearling sales at RaceClubs.com has without doubt ignited a passion to visit the ring and some might argue that it has transformed the way they prepare their stable as we look forward to the new season in waiting. On the flipside, when the yearling sales first came to fruition, sceptics advocated that it was just another way for the administrators to prolong seasonal sales of horses. Doubts have been quashed beyond all recognition and end of season sales have become more popular than ever anticipated.

There are obvious benefits you can gain from purchasing a yearling, the main being the ability to get to know the characteristics of your horse at zero outlay to your stable. With no stable fees to pay it is generally considered that you can train your new acquisition for a whole month after the yearling sales window closes. Drawing up a plan of attack with each individual and addressing his ability to determine the best route to take with the horse is a paramount part of the game process. Having so many training cycles to peruse before the season kicks off is great and if you are lucky enough it may well lead down the path to Championship glory.

Recent statistics within the challenge domain have indicated that yearlings are just as competitive as any horse bought from the ring once the season has begun. Last season there were six juvenile races over the finals festival. Of these six races, yearlings had the upper hand in two of them. Glorious Creature and Queen Alexandra were victorious in the Juvenile Stayer's races making it a double for the colts and the fillies in that division. There were also fourth places for Shotguns Dream in the Classic for colts, Granuaile in the Classic for fillies and Asianova Overdose in the Sprint. All in all making it a very successful venture for their owners.

The statistics make fantastic reading this season and will see the yearlings holding more than a double handful when numbers are crunched. When totalling up the number of berths available over all finals, so that’s eighteen races with fourteen runners, there are eighty-four runs to be had. Representing the yearlings in these races is an incredible thirty-three coming from the stalls. Put into perspective that is 39% of the total fields. When you consider that the window of opportunity to acquire these horses is so slim compared with the rest of the season it makes for an amazing statistic. If we look at the rest of the season and say there are twelve weeks to buy two year old horses from the sales ring who would have a realistic chance of making a final, it's hard to believe that the remaining 51 berths are going to be spread from horses that were born on or after 1st April 2010. If the percentage ratio that yearlings acquired in the two week window continued throughout the season then this would in fact accrue to nearly four times the amount that the season has produced, churning out approximately 198 (That's almost fifteen instances of a race).

So it is fair to say based on statistics that it does pay to have a flutter and look to the yearlings to bring home championship success and with so many runners in the final races this season it goes without saying that they will be there or there about looking to follow in the hoof prints of Glorious Creature and Queen Alexandra when it all kicks off on 28th July 2010!
