Rounding Off the action on day one of the festival, we turn to the elders. The 4-7yo series is by far the most tactical in terms of getting your horses into the final without gaining the additional penalties. More often than not a horse’s challenge career can be extended beyond the age of four, if handled correctly and this field is no exception. Five of the contenders come in on minimum weight. Mobil Flash was a creditable fourth in the juvenile sprint two seasons ago over the distance and on unfavourable ground. The low weight and nice draw on the rail only adds to the positives the horse can bring to the race. This race is a great opportunity to feature at the line and turn the tables on some of her opponents. Chloe Elizabeth will probably be looking for a little cut in the ground but is one for the short list. A monthly challenge final winner as a juvenile, she will look to get amongst them early. An impeccable final's record is brought to proceedings by Viva Forever. Four seasonal finals have given the yard three third place finishes and her crowning glory as Nunthorpe champion three seasons back. The six year old cannot be overlooked as a potential champion here. She will look for a speedier surface to show her full potential and her trainer will be hoping the skies remain free of an inclement forecast.

If form is to gone on Sparkling Soph and Doomsday Voyage are going to need every ounce of their allowance over others in the field. Neither look like the race is at their mercy and could be regarded as likeable sorts who have a chance if all and everything falls into place. Scenic Esplanade has competed in three challenge finals in her career and has booked Fabio Valentino for all three without as much as a place. You must wonder whether the stable have the patience with the jockey for a fourth booking. On her inner is the charge of successful trainer Team Johannson. Sachilin will probably hope the ground comes up good to be in it to win it. Preying for a little rain and two stalls up will be Urban Symphony, a monthly challenge winner as a juvenile over a mile may suggest this horse needs further to shine. Stable 76 will be represented by Goldikova. A very versatile filly that has form on most goings and distances and will be a very hot prospect should the clouds open and soften the ground.

Speak To Me Karla may be something of a pace maker to stable companion's in the race. She has picked up a couple of nice pots this season in qualifiers but the added weight will act as a barrier very difficult to overcome. Butlers Yard holds two entries into the race with Zambezi Express and the ever consistent Belle's Lullaby. "Always the bridesmaid and never the queen" springs to mind when you examine what this filly has done in her career. Can she finally break her finals jinx? No one will be more than hopeful than her trainer who realises that this may be her last chance to prove she has what it takes to lift a championship. Shes Quick is probably the champion trainer’s best chance in the race and has form over most of the rivals here. Drawn wide with 122lbs to lug may not be ideal for the filly but she is sure to come into the race with all guns blazing and her chance shouldn't be taken lightly.

There are many in with a shout in this race but all eyes will focus on Lightning Lucille as her effort may go down in virtual race horse history. Trawling through the archives I was unable to find a horse that has even had an opportunity to emulate what she could achieve if the race goes in her favour. The filly is without doubt the one to beat in many a trainers mind but can she lump 124lbs to victory and make herself immortal. Victory in the race will be her third challenge final success in as many seasons. She took the Juvenile Sprint aged two, The Nunthorpe at three and with a clear run could make it the hat trick in this race. Many a horse have tried and failed to win three challenge finals but to do it in consecutive seasons will be the ultimate achievement. The bubbly remains on ice for now but we should all raise a glass should Lightning Lucille grace the winners’ enclosure for a third time.

What The Trainers Say...

......"Mobil Flash has been eyeing this race all along. She'll have the perfect weight and a good draw going for her. Still, she'll need a good or firm turf course and a top 5 jock to get the job done."......Liveoak Stables

......"I'm looking forward to this race and I think Goldikova would be competitive on any ground, but if it comes up soft I think shes the one they all have to beat.".......Stable 76

......"Not the most versatile when it comes to prefered goings but clearly a top horse. It's a tough race to call.".....Team Johansson

......"A chance here for Belle's Lullaby to overturn her 2nd place hoodoo - she's been 2nd in all of her 4 final appearances so far. Carrying 2lbs more than some of her rivals but given a decent jockey i'm hoping she can finally bag a trophy. Zambezi Express is probably just making up the numbers here but stranger things have happened, haven't they? Good luck everyone, Phil."......Butlers Yard
