Many of these featured in last season's Classic Challenge Final for fillies and will re-oppose each other again. Lupus In Fabula was victorious on that day and the DerekW10 trained filly is a noticeable absentee. With stamina seemingly going to play a part in The Oaks this year, a couple of them will find the going tough. Zenzational is one who will not like the distance. Last season's Classic Juvenile runner-up does not stay the 2400m this race asks from the entrants and has next season in mind when she will fare a lot better over 2200m in The Queen Elizabeth. Tabasheer is another who doesn't quite stay and will want to concentrate her efforts over 2200m to show her best. Flowery Twats and Grumpo Stiltskin are both from the same 2200m mould. Life will be an uphill climb in this race with doubt as to whether either can get in a telling blow.
The make-up of the race will certainly favour the horse that can stay a little. There are a good few to choose from in the race that have form over an even further trip but it will probably boil down to which horse is considered the more natural runner at 2400m. Winning Post will hope his favoured pair of Heart Of Greed and Speech Of Silence perform will honour at stalls open. Both horses have had limited outings over the extended trip and are somewhat difficult to work out. The latter has slightly better form to view but it does not distract from the fact that the horse has not seen a race of this distance since a juvenile qualifier last term. This may indicate that the trainer believes the horse will not stay and like others before her may be best watched for this race with an eye on The Queen Elizabeth. So what will stay in the race?
Hand Of God has the heart of a lion and will get every inch of the distance. She spent most of last season in the winners' enclosure as Irish Jeweller decided to cash in on her, rather than assault for victory in the classic. Scally Munter will give a good account in the race. She certainly has the lungs to compete but whether she is a natural over the 2400m distance is inconclusive to date. A few good runs in qualifying may flatter the horse and she may be a better bet for the St. Leger. Where's The Snow is already a challenge winner over the distance but fast going was the order of the day then and this muddy track could prove a little sticky for even her toe. She looks to have the ground for the St. Leger and must be overlooked here. Last season Queen Alexandra took the juvenile stayers title and although well in here, she too has the St. Leger in her sights.
It all bodes well for the final four on the list as they look to be the horses that look more at home at 2400m than others in the race. Path Of Death, Granuaile, Surrounde and Burkes Monstress are sure to be holding all the aces. All four have consistent form over the trip and suggestion is that the winner of the race will come from one of the four. The muddy going may not suit Burkes Monstress as Burkveen's black filly would have excelled on a faster track. The Path Of Death may have shown good form over course and distance in the past but she has failed in all quests thus far to win on muddy, it's possible all will go to plan and she can erase the past and make the race her own. Granuaile has all the conditions to suit but form has only ever seen one run over 2400m on a muddy surface. Ok, so she won on that day but confidence in the filly came up short when she attempted the distance on two separate occasions later, failing to make an impact. So that leaves Surrounde. Her chance is by far the better of a funny bunch. The ground has not proved beyond her in the past and she is a multiple winner over 2400m. Sky Castle Stables will fancy his chances in this race and herein is my selection for the race. A decent run can pay dividends.
What The Trainers Say...
......"Hand of God is the best horse I pulled from the ring and I decided to race flat out so this its only chance of winning a final. The Oaks is her best chance although would have prefered Fast ground has a nice draw so with right jock could go well. The St.Ledger is over 3200 and she doesn't get this distance so really don't fancy here chances in this one. Good luck to all stables in finals."......Irish Jeweller
......"The Oaks has been Where's The Snow's main goal but she'd prefer to run on snow or ice than in the mud. She's won in the mud but will again need a top jock to land the top prize. Others look better suited to the wet going.".......Liveoak Stables
......"My filly, Granuaile will be a participant in this season's Oaks Final. Despite being one of the best 3yold fillies around, the distance of the Final will not play to her strengths. Should she be lucky enough to draw Charlie on the big night, she just might make the placings, otherwise I fear that she will be a back number. That said it is tremendous for a smalltime player like me to have a filly good enough to compete at this exalted level and I am excitedly looking forward to the Final."......On The Bridle Member Submission: Moletown
