The RaceClubs.com Challenge Series: Profile Of A Legend

Derek's Profile

It goes without saying, that legendary status is not something that is just handed to you on a plate. The work you put in and the investment you make are contributing factors when seeking such high regard. The virtual fraternity here at RaceClubs.com has seen some true champions over the years, Derek being just one to mention. There have been and there are still great trainers playing the game, all of which have made their impact known in their own special way. Pastmaster's such as Ken Allen, Andie Hargie and Dallas, to name but a few, have always provided the virtual world with a know how of the game, second to none. If spoken of in the same breath as these true greats it is testament to any trainer. Derek happens to be one just trainer who can say he's been there and done it!

Joining the site in January 2006, Derek's rise to stardom began. His first season was nothing to shout about and would be considered a toe dipping experience. During the early months of his career he spent his time learning the complexities of the game, striving to obtain the knowledge that is so vital to succeed. It soon became evident to the trainer that his future was to be within the challenge series.

His first taste of challenge racing came when he bought a horse at auction by the name of Transvestite. Being no world beater she struggled to a seventh place in the Get Minted Monthly Challenge Final run at America on 25th March 2006, going down to Ghengis Khanby some three lengths. Derek later realising that the horse was not on a par to his now found standard, he parted with the animal, probably at a loss; but his knowledge had benefitted from the experience and what would follow over the next couple of years in his stable was nothing short of magical!

He became no stranger to the auction and regularly paid handsome fees to secure the services of the creme de la creme. In his first season he bought a horse who went by the name of Dec 27th, who he would later sell to an up and coming trainer, who goes by the name of Shotgun Mike. It was his dealings with Shotgun that brought about his most memorable moment. A huge fee was paid for a the horse,Cosmic Millenium, in excess of £2700 ensured the Derby prospect would carry the colours.

In his first "proper season", Derek finished a respectable 14th in the trainer standings. He was to experience the thrill of his first Championship place at the end of July when The Natural came home in fourth place. It was an agonising wait of nearly two seasons but the trainer had finally cracked his Championship voodoo when claiming a Cesarewich with the filly Clear Impressionwho prompted the comments of, ".... Wow! At last, my first end of season win. I left it a bit late though. I was actually on the toilet when the race was run, is that an omen, should I spend all challenge finals there in the future?"

It may come to you as a bit of a surprise but our subject has never won the trainer's championship. His best to date came when finishing runner-up during the season April to July 2007. Despite this, his win and place money is awesome. He has recenlty joined an elite few to have surpassed over £100K. With no let up, the wins and money are sure to take this figure on and on. The recent acquisition of El Nino Got A Bro signalled a prolonged stay at RaceClubs.com and with the addition Of Lupus In Fabula, last seasons juvenile classic winner, he is in for some fruitful times.

The Challenge Series success that the stable has had is good reading. The self proclaimed "King of The Derby" has had five runs, scoring three places and undoubtedly the best race of his training lifetime saw Cosmic Millenium take The Derby.

The Derby Final - 3YO Colts

It's every trainer's ambition to lift the famous trophy. It will stand the test of time and Derek can always proclaim to have won the race. However, no more than a half hour later, the colours were represented in the winners' enclosure again. It was unprecedented and adding to his Derby success, The Oaks followed.

The Oaks Final - 3YO Fillies

In a career that has seen six championship titles and four monthly final victories, amassing over £13.5K in win and place money in finals alone, it has had its failings. Seven runs in The Nunthorpe final has not yielded one place, let alone a win. The juvenile division has witnessed a combined run total of thirteen finals with his greatest success coming with the female of the species, scoring a championship in both stayers and classic finals. His record with juvenile colts can boast nothing in comparison to the fillies. For all his six runnings at juvenile colt finals have returned zero, all failing where others have triumphed. Nevertheless his overall success rate is still up there with the very best and surely success will continue.

July 2008 would witness his final race in the Challenge Series, as he left the game to do some travelling. Having invested big in the game and making a tidy profit, it was down to Camboro to make his exit from the game a fitting and special bon voyage. Unfortunately the horse could not quite wave him a merry goodbye and finished down the field. A mass exile from the yard soon followed, selling off all that he had accumulated and setting off for the likes of New Zealand, Australia, Thailand and such were all part of the master plan.

Now Derek is back!
