No sooner had one challenge series ended than another begin. The new season brings a whole new series to look forward to and the first of the races went off with a bang, especially for the Kopites yard. King Kenny D was a bit of a let down in the juvenile final and by his trainers own admission was more of a watcher than a contender. The colt struck first blood in this seasons opener with a well earned victory in the capable hands of Eric Sun. Always to the fore the winner took control of the race three out and stayed on well to gain a half length victory. Ice Rocket came into the race unbeaten. A late colt from the sales ring, he was never going to be able to compete as a juvenile on the challenge scene but clearly holds the ability judging on this fine second to his more experienced opposition.

Flight Of Icarus made it to a place and can figure more as the series progresses. His trainer, Mick's Heroes will be more than happy coming out of this race after some disappointing form of late. It looks like "Icarus" has rediscovered his mojo. Shadow Bullet was a WCD winner over my own Ultimate Velocity. He has shown excellent form on yielding to date and may have found this slightly drier surface a little too fast for him as he likes to dip a toe when racing. Nevertheless a fine opener to the series will please Shadow Lodge, one of my trainers to keep a close eye on this season.

Positive Political Refugee took an age to get going but when he got going, he flew. The colt must be worthy of the notebook over 1400m.
Negative Silver Sprinter came to this race as champion of the juveniles. He may not have liked the going as much as the yielding he won the title at but his trainer would have expected a place at least.

Sakhmet Victor Consortio Always prominent, stole race from halfway, eased
2nd Mapperley Heights Gissys Nags Sluggish start, headway throughout, ran on strong
3rd This Is War Stable 76 Early pace led, headed, came again
4th Mrs Cool (USA) Black Death At rear, some progress to halfway, ran on
5th Chanel Coco Cotton Castle Midfield and settled, ran on past tired horses
6th Colin's Sister Members Very slow away, back marker, made progress, one paced
7th Lightning Queen Burkveen Racing Wide throughout, one pace, unable to strike blow
8th Dixie Dolly Shotgun Mike Early pace through 300m, faded from halfway
9th Carnaby Shotgun Mike Prominent early, lacked pace to challenge, faded fast
10th Hyper Go Go Hodge House Midfield to halfway, faded fast

Sakhmet made her seasonal reappearance count when winning this race a tad cleverly with a little something in reserve. Having stolen a march on her rivals at halfway, the Victor Consortio filly extended a three length advantage over her rivals under the masterful guidance of Charlie Saxon. Having finished fourth behind the mightily impressive Shes My Girl in the juvenile final, attention turns to a successful effort in this season's Nunthorpe and what better way to lay down the gauntlet to her rivals by taking this race in such impressive style. A few in the race looked like fitness may have been an issue but take nothing away from the winner.

Mapperley Heights seemed to enjoy the surface, even with a bad start she soon got into her stride and finished a worthy second. She had the better of the winner in the juvenile final over an extended trip and may be better suited by further. With the tables turned in this race both horses will be on the lookout for Shes My Girl this season. Sakhmet appears to race better over 1200m and it will be interesting to see the three collide in future qualifiers. Shes My Girl is a touch of class but Mapperley Heights and Sakhmet are more than capable of heading her at the line and will relish the challenge this season. She's Cool (USA) was having her first taste of the challenge spectrum and turned in a very respectable fourth place for her efforts. Black Death will know exactly what to expect from his charge and will target future qualification races for sure.

Positive Mapperley Heights and Sakhmet both came out of the race with positives. It is fair to say that the former may have Sakhmet's number over a longer trip and for that reason must be one to note over 1400m.
Negative Hyper Go Go didn't seem to handle the conditions too well and may be suited over a longer trip with a little cut in the ground.
