Enter the Epsom OaksThe Epsom Oaks is more than a race; it’s an event that can launch a horse’s career into the international arenaSerious horse trainers from across the globe plan for the Epsom Oaks because it is held in such high esteem alongside the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (France) and the Breeders Cup (U.S.A.). You can expect a flurry of foreigners descending upon Epsom Downs, Epsom, Surrey, England.; where the locals refer to it simply as “The Derby” (pronounced Dar-bee) but hold the race in high esteem because it forms the second leg of the English Triple Crown (preceded by the 2,000 Guineas, followed by the St Leger) and forms one of the United Kingdom Classic Races. Interestingly, the name was decided on the flip of a coin between the 12th Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury. The Earl won the flip but Sir Charles won the race! The race was established in 1779, one year before the introduction of the Derby Stakes. It was named after The Oaks, a house located to the east of Epsom which was leased to the 12th Earl of Derby. He and his guests devised the race during a party at this house in 1778. The first horse to win the race was a filly by the name of Bridget who owned by Lord Derby himself.Fast forward 232 years and the next Epsom Oaks winner could be yours!
