With the emphasis on getting four runs from your horse at challenge level for horses aged three and over, it was no surprise to see the champion trainer saddle four runners. Coming fresh into the race and off the back of a third in last season's final, Insomnic Illusion opened his account this season in some style. The six year old came with a power finish and one by one picked off his opposition to collar stable companion, Fatal Inertia close home. With a clear run up the rail and passing tired horses the winner made it look oh so easy. The second can count themselves a little unlucky but nevertheless put in a solid performance.

Dual challenge runner-up in The Nunthorpe and The Derby, El Nino Got A bro flew the flag in this race for the "top heavy" colts. Carrying 140lbs against stiff opposition was mightily impressive but not even the exploits of Charlie Saxon could guide this one to victory. A spirited effort behind the front two proves that "monsters" can have a place in the 4-7YO series. Here Come Da Nazz is a horse you may be not too familiar with. Unable to produce the goods over 1400m in an end of season consolation, this colt may be well suited to the shorter distance of 1200m. His stamina may come into question though as he faded close home when holding second place and was fortunate to gain fourth place from his running on stable mate.

Positive Insomnic Illusion looked classy over the trip and could be a major player in this season's shake up. The colt will probably try and keep the weight to a minimum from here on in but looks odds on to contest the end of season final based on this effort. An early favourite for the championship maybe? Time will tell.
Negative Clearly Bust doesn't look like a horse capable of challenging for honours at this level and may be better suited outside the challenge arena based on his exploits here.

Newbury Fillies Sprint Qualifier 4-7YO
- - Monday 2nd August 2010 - -

Chloe Elizabeth Burkveen Racing Settled wide, asked to quicken halfway, ran on, readily
2nd Circle Of Life The Face Slow away, rails, tracked winner, ran on, just failed
3rd Flouncy Flouncy Burkveen Racing Quick away, led halfway, headed and no extra close home
4th Lightning Lucille Burkveen Racing With stable companion 2nd, one pace when headed
5th Sunline (NZ) Sky Castle Stables Prominent early doors, behind halfway, not quicken
6th Majestic Legacy Team Johansson Sluggish start, behind, headway to halfway, no extra
7th Deadly Experiment Shotgun Mike Midfield, showed pace to halfway, one paced

The fillies came out to contest a 1000m dash to the line where a good pitch is essential and a little luck in running is a must. Chloe Elizabeth forged a solo path out wide and ran on strong close home. Seeing a stride past halfway she quickened impressively to collar the leaders close home. Circle Of Life with a better break may have stolen the show. Her powerful run up the rails, not too dissimilar to the winners', proved vital. Fortunate to get the openings she needed against the rail, the filly can consider herself a little unlucky not to bring home the bacon.

Flouncy Flouncy led them a merry dance early in the race but may have burned herself out of the race late on as she faded close home. Not disgraced in defeat, she will have her day and looks ideally suited to the minimum trip. If she can keep her thrusters at full throttle in future races she will definitely land a prize. Lightning Lucile is one of the most consistent sprint performers, if not the greatest sprint filly to gallop the virtual tracks at the moment. Although failing in her quest to win the sprint triple crown, in successive seasons I might add, her performance here is more than a boost to the yard who will look to step up on her second behind Belle's Lullaby last week in this season's championship.

Positive Circle Of Life made a poor start in the race and given that she just failed to get up close home she must go into the notebook as a future winner. It's possible that 1200m will suit better but no doubt she can take this form into her next race.
Negative Not so much of a negative but Team Johansson’s runner put in a poor effort. The trainer would have expected a little more from Majestic Legacy. The jockey, Jacob Forrester gave her a poor ride full of indecision. The horse is better than this over the minimum trip.
